From Our Hearts

Dear A.C.T at Work Family,

Welcome to the 3rd issue of Working for the Lord! We hope that you all are finding this newsletter beneficial to your walk with Christ.

We apologize for the fact that this is arriving in your inbox a couple of days late.  Patty has been remodeling her home (which feels like a whole new house, Praise God), and as you will read in Dolly's article, she has been having a Pity Party (just joking, but she has been swamped juggling a bunch of balls in the air).

This month we are covering some great topics. In our Family Keys, Paula goes into the addiction of online gaming. It is scary that now with the resource of internet, we can allow Satan to reach us in our homes. We have to be ever vigilant with our family, and making sure that what we allow into our house is an edification of our values. In our Acknowledging Christ column, Dolly writes a powerful article on keeping the faith through our trials, and that it is okay sometimes to take time to have a Pity Party before moving on.  La'Tara addresses in Proverbial Ethics why we always have to work before we rest.

We continue to encourage you to support each other, build relationships, and become a family in Christ.  Be sure to visit our column Fishers of Men and get to go Debbie Wells.  If you would like to be featured in the Fishers of Men column, email us at info@actatwork.com

We welcome the new members joining us in April.  We have been going through some changes, so if you have not received the link to be listed in the directory, please contact us at membership@actatwork.com and we will get the link to you.  Please continue to help spread the word about Acknowledging Christ Together at Work.

Have a blessed month!

Proverbial Ethics

Folly and Foolishness: Enemies of Successful Business
By LaTara V. Ham-Ying
www.s2s4christ.org

“Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which having no captain, overseer, ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep- So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, and your need like an armed man.”  Psalms 6:6-11

Work! Work! Work! Why do we always have to work?

It seems as if we live to work. You know what … we do. At the same time we are designed to relax. However, the dangers come in when we relax too much and get the sluggard attitude spoken of in Psalms 6.

We need to work in order to survive. Like the ant we have to be prepared for what it is to come. Psalms 6: 6-11 gives us a guide for working and even for relaxing.

First we see that the ant was not working for the approval of others. She knew that there was a need for the work to be done and who was around looking and lurking was not her concern. All she wanted to do was work so that she was prepared for what was to come. This ant knew that her time for relaxing came after the work was done.

Next we see that the ant knew when to do her work. She knew the best times to work and she did so with diligence. Have you ever noticed that the ant does not come out much in the winter. There is a reason for that. Where there is winter, there is not much harvest. Where there is winter there is a lot of death. The winter is the time that the ant has been preparing for all year long.

We also see that the ant is wise. That is evident in her working style and mannerisms. Psalms 4:7 states that wisdom is the principle thing. Why? Because wisdom gives us the good sense to know what to do with the knowledge we have gained. Without it, our knowledge has no true understanding.

So what about relaxing? Are we allowed to relax? Well, even God rested. Not because He had to, but rather to show us the benefit of resting in Him. So, yes we can relax. The key lies in how we relax.

Some of my most relaxing moments are when I write in my journal, read my bible, lay in my bed and talk to God, and spending time with my family.

The sluggard is the person who rests all the wrong ways. The one that sleeps the day away and wakes up having done nothing productive. Sleeping the day away, the day is always in the literal sense. The sluggard sleeps away the day in so many other ways: networking too long, reading the wrong stuff, browsing the internet all day, attending one too many seminars, not following up with clients, breaking appointments just because, making goals and not keeping them, and the list goes on.

The ant does not know the meaning of folly and foolishness. The ant understands that she is the provider of her home and she needs to get her work done first and then she can relax and play.

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1).

Instructions from the Lord

Commit your works to the Lord and your plans will be established.  Proverbs 16:3

When I read this verse, it reminds me that we should be giving every aspect of our lives, including our business or work to God. God has already established the plans for our lives if we will only be in His will.

Acknowledging Christ

Pass Me the Cake, I'm Having A Pity Party
by Dolly Hooker
http://actatwork.com

I know we have all heard the statement, "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade". Unfortunately last week I was too exhausted to squeeze the lemons. I was physically, mentally, emotionally and even spiritually worn out. It had been a rough week. Actually it has been a rough couple of years.

Following a serious back injury and surgery, my husband became disabled. Our lifestyle changed overnight. We had to sell our home and vehicles. We lost our health insurance. We cut up the credit cards. We went through our savings and my husband's retirement. Through all of it I continued leaning on God. I knew He would provide our every need and He has.

So, why the pity party? Last week we finally had to face the reality that my husband is getting worse. While I have watched him deteriorate, I have been hoping and praying for a miracle. After a disheartening visit with the doctor, I wanted, I needed some time alone. Of course that wasn't possible. My six-year-old wanted and needed his mommy. I had a project due for a client. My husband needed me. My house was yelling, "Clean me, clean me". So here I was with an arm load of lemons and all I wanted was to have a party. A pity-party! And so I did!

You may be surprised to hear someone who loves God and strives to serve Him in every area of their life share how to have a successful pity party. But here I am.

Ecclesiastes 3 says, " There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What does the worker gain from his toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on men. He has made everything beautiful in it's time".

It was my time to weep. It was my time to mourn. It was my time to give up.

I baked a cake, I bought a Pepsi and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and threw a party. My husband, son, and I snuggled in front of the TV, put in a movie and we ate cake and candy and drank Pepsi. We talked about all the blessings God had given us. Together we laughed and danced and embraced and we loved. After we put our son to bed, my husband and I spent time talking. During that time, we mended old hurts and heartaches, we spent time healing our marriage, we began to build a better relationship.

It was the perfect time to have a pity party. God took my burden and in His time made something beautiful. The bills still need to be paid every month and there will be many more doctor visits, but God will continue to provide our needs and my husband will be healed in God's perfect timing. It may not take place until God calls him home, but he will be healed.

So, the next time you are handed lemons and are too weak to make lemonade, pass the cake and have a party.

Family Keys

Another Threat to Christian Families: Online Gaming & Gaming Addiction
By Paula Dodds
http://www.PSDodds.com

I’ve been talking about writing an article about online addiction and online gaming for a while. As part of my counseling classes, we’ve had sections on addiction and recovery for different substances. There are also addictions to behaviors that we’ve studied. As a WAHM and primary caregiver to my two little ones, I have firsthand knowledge of previewing movies, censoring TV shows and limiting “evils” such as sugars and high-fat snacks. Our daughters share a PC, full of educational games, that sits literally twelve feet from my desk. We even allow our six-year-old online (with supervision) to family-friendly sites to play educational games.

It wasn’t until this past week that I realized one of the choices we made wasn’t in their best interest. One of the sites we visit two to three times a week allows you to create your own “pet.” Then, you have to play games in order to pay for overpriced food to feed your pet. This past week, however, we didn’t have time to log on at all, so my six-year-old went a little crazy when she signed on and saw that our pets (three total) were all dying because we hadn’t taken the time to feed them all week. I tried to calm her down about it, but there was no consoling her.

She started using the same phrases that internet gamers use as to why they have to keep playing: “We’ve spent so much time on this” and “We HAVE to make them better.”

Now, while this may be a MILD example of how an addiction starts, it can easily get one thinking. When a child spends so much time online playing games that it disrupts school work or family life, that child may be caught in a cycle of addiction. Most of us have heard the horror stories of children, normally teens, who play online so much that they forget to eat, flunk out of school, or even die…. But the ones you hear about are the extremes.

Why would someone succumb to an addiction to online gaming?

In kids, it’s often their personality traits. A child who is shy, quiet or even nerdy in real life can become charming, witty and personable in the game. The fantasy lives of the players can compensate for what they feel they’re lacking in real life. People can actually live out their ideal selves. Kids can also get hooked on the highs of the games. While understandable, it’s necessary to teach kids that life is sometimes boring! It can also be a loss of control in reality. In games, it’s easy to control what your character does. If there’s something that’s going on with kids where they feel out of control, escape into this world of un-reality can be reassuring.

How can you tell if your child has a problem with online games?
• Majority of their non-school hours are spent playing the games.
• They fall asleep regularly in school.
• They can no longer keep up with their assignments or their grades start to slip.
• They lie about their gaming use or “sneak time” after lights-out.
• They choose to play their online games instead of seeing their friends.
• They drop out of other social groups or stop going to their normal activities, such as sporting events or clubs.
• They’re irritable or “spaced out” (disconnected) when they’re not playing their games.
For online gamers, approximately 10% are probably addicted.

What can be done about online gaming addictions?

Scientists who study this have developed a twelve-step program, much likes the one used in AA/NA. While all addictions are related, it’s important to think about an online gaming addiction more in terms of an eating addiction than something along the lines of a crack addiction.

Obviously, the easiest way to avoid this is to be truly informed about what your kids are doing and previewing even family-friendly games to see what they expect from your kids. But, in lieu of that, it’s important to be informed on this new threat on families.

Denomination: Four Square

Company name: Natural Wellness

If you are comfortable doing so, please share your testimony:
Oh my!! Yes and thank you for the opportunity! I am 48 years old and I became a Christian at 16. I attended church with some friends of mine in high school and I fell in love with the Lord way back then. I was the first member of my family to get saved and I can now say that my entire family knows the salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ! I went off to a Christian College and returned home to marry a hometown boy. To my devastation, that marriage ended in failure and I was alone as a single mother of one precious little boy for a couple of years before I met the wonderful man I am married to now. God was soooo good to Shane and I and he brought my husband Bryan into our lives 23 years ago and it just gets better with each passing year. We have raised our children to know the love of the Lord and all of them serve Him with a passion. They are all so inspiring to their father and I and such blessings in our lives. Bryan and I have held leadership positions in our church for years and we've so enjoyed serving the Lord in the different capacities He has provided us to do so in. I led worship for 7 years under a man named Terry Talbot, you may have heard of John Michael Talbot, Terry is his brother. The Lord also graced me with the experience of being nominated to run for Mrs. Oregon United States 2003. I didn't win the crown but I did win Mrs. Oregon Enterprize 2003. I credit the Lord for all the wonderful blessings in my life and every single day is a new adventure in Him. His love keeps me near and listening to Him. I am currently involved in a Bible Study in my hometown (mixed churches/women's group) and we are going through a book called *Captivating* written by John and Stasi Eldrige. Life is good, progesterone is good....ahhhh.....God is GOOD!!!!

How has being a Christian affected your business?
Oh I think it's the core of everything I do in life! In business or any other aspect of my life, He is the Pres. and I know that without his favor upon me...I am nothing, but with Him, I can do all things! 10 years ago, I prayed the prayer of Jabez over the business I started back then, called Debbie's Clayground. He POURED blessing upon that business and since then, I've been very careful what I ask for because the Lord delivers!!! I seek Him and try very diligently to follow when he says *go here*, *move this way or that* One thing I've learned as a Christian Business Woman, is that I am always taking the temperature of my business and when I feel like I am serving IT, rather than it serving me...I know I am out of kilter and often run back to the Lord to help me make the adjustments I need to make to keep my business in a healthy place in my life.

What is the hardest thing about being acknowledging Christ in your business?
Well....I suspect that many of you have noticed the *chilly climate* that has settled upon us here in the US, concerning our Christianity. It amazes me that all other faiths/religions are being tolerated but Christianity is nearly abhorred at this time in history. I know the Word of God tells us that this is to be expected in the last days, but I am still shocked that seemingly reasonable people still have such open disdain for my faith. While I have been told of this time in His Word...I am almost always shocked all over again when I meet with that spirit. The hardest thing for me when that happens is to respond in a way that Christ Himself would and not in the vengeful way my flesh would....I need prayer in this area...lots of it!

What has been the greatest blessing for you as a Christian working for the Lord?
Oh I love when I see the *light* go on in the minds and hearts of people I share Him with! I know that my very life should be all the *words* I need to make a difference for Him and as I grow older, I am much more content to let my life do my witnessing for me. James 1:19–Help me to be quick to listen and slow to speak. This verse is one of my favorites to remember when I am dealing in business....and the Lord shows me so much when I keep my mouth shut and pull y ears out and listen to my customers tell me their needs. Living life with the Lord in the drivers seat is truly an adventure and I am learning to trust that His ways are not our ways.....but they are always THE way!!

Do you have any words of encouragement you would like to share with our readers?
Another one of my favorite verses is Psalm 16:6 Below are three translations....I love the fact that the Lord loves me enough to place boundaries around me...I love even more that His Holy Spirit has caused me to fall in love with His love and protection, and bow my neck in recognition of His marvelous love! Ahhhh...the boundaries have fallen in pleasant places for me and indeed..I do have a good inheritance!
The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places. Yes, I have a good inheritance. (WEB)
The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; Yea, I have a goodly heritage. (ASV)
Fair are the places marked out for me; I have a noble heritage. (BBE)

Is there anything else you would like for our readers to know about you or your business?
Oh yes! Thanks so much for allowing me to share about my new business! All of my life I've been an entrepreneur. The Lord blessed me by allowing me to be home for 17 years running a Daycare, so I could raise my own children. 10 years ago I opened another business called Debbie's Clayground and met with blessing after blessing in that business as well....I learned so very much about marketing, myself and life! 3 years ago, I hit a very hard wall in my life that I now know was peri-menopause. It change everything about life as I had known it before it settled in. I became severely depressed and until then, I had rarely even experienced the blues, let alone the rigors of depression. I ended up on 5 different prescription medications, and life had been reduced to me shuffling around the house, hardly knowing my own name. The brain fog, the anxiety, hot flashes, night sweats, restless leg syndrome, fibromyalgia and the list goes on and on....I cried out to the Lord asking for answers and he showed up in a MIGHTY way! He led me to a support group, much like the one I now run myself and I learned about the science of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, namely natural progesterone. I started the protocol and added 4 other nutritional supplements to support myself as I was aging and today I am completely prescription free, my cholesterol is lowering dramatically, I am no longer hypoglycemic, (after 12 years), and all of my estrogen dominant symptoms are gone, including my fibromyalgia! After only 6 weeks on the progesterone and other nutritionals, I had got my life back! My husband and I were so thankful....he calls the progesterone, *Marriage In a Tube* :) I decided then and there that I wanted to help educate as many women as I could about the alternative choices they have at this time in their lives...and that's what I've been doing for the last 10 months. The Company I represent, Neways International, is more than incredible...all of our products are free of toxins and carcinogens. In addition, the compensation plan is beyond wonderful! I've only been in the company for 10 full months and I have a team of 44 women I train and coach to help spread the mission I am on. I am very close to car Qualifying in my new company and I am always looking for women to come alongside of me and join me in spreading the word on natural, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. I consider myself an eternal student and study daily to help me learn more about the industry I am in. If any of you would like to learn more about natural hormone replacement...I would love to have you join my support group. I don't require posting activity to remain a member....I know it's a challenging time in a woman's life and often she is doing all she can in a day to get done what she needs to get done....come sit and just learn with us. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/HormoneHealthNW/

Would you like to offer any specials for our readers?
My special for you is a special that I normally only offer to members of my own support group....if any of you are interested in trying the Endau Natural Progesterone Cream, or any of the other products from Neways....you can do so at my cost, for the month of May. Please feel free to email me with any questions you have! I'd love to chat with you about the marvelous products that changed my life! I feel better now than I have in over 15 years!
Thank you so much for reading this far and thank you for the opportunity to share about my new business passion!
Blessings~
Deb
